Chronic clenching and grinding can place significant strain on the muscles of the jaw, leading to soreness, facial tension, headaches, and discomfort. For patients experiencing persistent muscle-related symptoms, Botox® or Xeomin® injections may offer an additional option for relief.
How Does Xeomin Work?
Xeomin is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles by reducing the signals that cause them to contract. When injected into overactive jaw muscles, most commonly the masseter and temporalis muscles, it can help reduce the intensity of clenching and relieve associated muscle tension.
By decreasing excessive muscle activity, treatment may offer several benefits:
- Reduced jaw muscle pain and soreness, particularly in patients with chronic clenching.
- Relief from muscle-related facial tension and certain tension-type headaches.
- Less intense muscle contractions associated with clenching and grinding.
- Improved comfort during everyday activities, such as chewing and speaking, for patients whose symptoms respond to treatment.
What to Expect from Treatment
Treatment is performed in our office and involves a series of small injections into the targeted muscles. The procedure is generally quick, with minimal downtime for most patients.
Results develop gradually over several days to weeks and are temporary, typically lasting a few months. Individual responses vary, and repeat treatments may be considered when appropriate.
A Personalized Approach to Jaw Pain
Botox® and Xeomin® are not a cure for TMD, but they may be helpful for selected patients experiencing persistent muscle-related discomfort. They are often considered alongside other conservative therapies, including jaw exercises, habit awareness, physical therapy, and custom occlusal guards.
Dr. Barbosa will evaluate your symptoms, jaw muscles, and dental history to determine whether this treatment may be appropriate for you.
Our goal is to help reduce muscle tension, relieve discomfort, and improve your day-to-day quality of life through a thoughtful, individualized approach to care.
