Fluoride, Sealants & SDF

For our younger patients especially, preventive dentistry can have a lifelong impact. Establishing healthy habits and protecting teeth early can help prevent more extensive dental treatment later in life.

Fluoride varnish helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria in our mouths and the foods and drinks in our diets. For patients who are more susceptible to cavities, fluoride can provide an additional layer of protection against tooth decay.

Dental sealants provide another simple and effective form of prevention. A thin protective coating is placed over the deep grooves of susceptible teeth—particularly the permanent molars—helping to keep food and bacteria from settling into areas that can be difficult to clean. Sealants can be especially valuable during the childhood and teenage years, when snacking habits, dietary choices, and brushing skills may still be developing.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) gives us another conservative option when tooth decay has already begun. It can be particularly helpful for very young children, patients with special needs, the geriatric, or anyone for whom traditional dental treatment may not be appropriate or possible at that time. Whether due to age, ability to tolerate treatment, medical considerations, or other circumstances, there are times when immediately restoring a tooth isn’t the best approach. SDF can help arrest the progression of certain areas of tooth decay and may also reduce sensitivity, allowing us to monitor the tooth and, in some cases, delay more invasive treatment until it is necessary or can be completed more comfortably and safely.

We believe good dentistry doesn’t always mean doing more. Sometimes the most thoughtful approach is the most conservative one. Whenever appropriate, preserving healthy tooth structure and postponing restorative treatment can benefit a tooth over its lifetime.

Prevention is one of the simplest and most cost-effective investments you can make in your dental health. Our goal is to prevent disease when we can, intervene early when we need to, and recommend treatment when it truly benefits you.
