Think about how much work your teeth do every day. We bite, chew, clench, and sometimes grind—year after year. Much like the tires on a car, teeth can show the effects of all that use over time.
Teeth with large fillings, significant decay, cracks, fractures, or previous root canal treatment may eventually lose enough natural tooth structure that another filling is no longer the most predictable way to restore them. When a significant portion of the tooth has been compromised, a dental crown, sometimes called a “cap,” may be recommended.
A crown covers and protects the remaining tooth, helping to restore its strength, shape, function, and appearance while distributing the forces of chewing over the tooth more evenly. At Cedars Family Dental, the crowns we most commonly use are made from lithium disilicate or zirconia ceramic crowns, with the material selected based on the location of the tooth, the forces it needs to withstand, and your individual needs. Crowns are carefully designed and shade-matched to blend naturally with the surrounding teeth.
Our goal is always to preserve as much healthy natural tooth structure as possible while choosing a restoration that will protect the tooth for the years ahead.
